Prince Edward Island might be Canada’s smallest province, but it just earned some major international recognition.
Lonely Planet has officially named Prince Edward Island one of its 25 must-visit destinations in the world for 2027, putting the Island alongside destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and beyond.
PEI is also one of only two Canadian destinations included on the destination list for 2027, alongside Québec.
And while Islanders already know there’s a lot more to PEI than Anne of Green Gables, Lonely Planet highlighted another major reason travellers should visit: the Island’s incredible food and coastal experiences.
PEI Is One Of The Best Places To Visit In 2027
Lonely Planet’s annual Best in Travel guide highlights 50 picks for the year ahead, divided into 25 must-visit destinations and 25 must-do experiences around the world.
For 2027, Prince Edward Island earned a spot among the 25 destinations.
Lonely Planet named PEI “Best for catching your own dinner,” putting a major spotlight on the Island’s seafood culture.
The publication highlighted hands-on experiences like oyster tonging, lobster trapping, mackerel fishing and mussel gathering as reasons food lovers should have PEI on their travel list.
For a province famous for its lobster, oysters, mussels and other seafood, it’s a pretty fitting title.
PEI’s Beaches And Coastline Got International Attention
It wasn’t just the seafood that caught Lonely Planet’s attention.
The travel publication also highlighted PEI’s beaches and coastal scenery.
The Island is famous for its red sandstone cliffs, sandy beaches, rolling farmland, lighthouses and small seaside communities.
From the beaches of Prince Edward Island National Park to the red cliffs found along the Island’s coastline, there are plenty of places that look like they belong on a postcard.
And now those landscapes are getting attention on an international level.
There’s A Lot More To PEI Than Anne Of Green Gables
Anne of Green Gables remains one of PEI’s most famous connections to the rest of the world, bringing visitors to Cavendish and other parts of the Island every year.
But Lonely Planet’s recognition highlights just how much more there is to experience.
Visitors can spend their trip exploring beaches and coastal communities, eating locally caught seafood, visiting lighthouses, experiencing PEI’s music and culture and road-tripping through the Island’s countryside.
The publication also points to fall as another great time to experience PEI, particularly for travellers interested in food.
PEI Was One Of Only Two Canadian Destinations Selected
Prince Edward Island wasn’t the only Canadian destination to make Lonely Planet’s list.
Québec was also selected as one of the world’s must-visit destinations for 2027.
Lonely Planet highlighted experiences across the province, including Québec City, Montréal, the Eastern Townships and the St. Lawrence.
That means just two Canadian destinations made the 25-destination list, and one of them is right here in Atlantic Canada.
For Canada’s smallest province, that’s some pretty huge recognition.
And if PEI was already on your Canadian travel bucket list, 2027 might be the year to finally make the trip.
