Crews continue work near Kingston and Holyrood as fire risk remains high
Two wildfires on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula have led to evacuation orders in several communities, with firefighting crews and water bombers continuing work to contain the flames.
On Monday, residents in Small Point–Adam’s Cove–Blackhead–Broad Cove and Kingston were asked to evacuate due to a growing fire near Kingston. Later that night, Western Bay was also ordered to leave, while Ochre Pit Cove residents were advised to stay ready. A separate fire near Holyrood prompted partial evacuations in Conception Bay South.
The Kingston fire is now estimated at 258 hectares, while the Holyrood fire covers about 20 hectares. Both remain active but are being closely monitored, with crews on site and aircraft assisting.
The Avalon Peninsula is currently under a very high to extreme fire risk, with a fire ban in effect. Weather changes expected later Tuesday could help firefighting efforts, though smoke may affect air quality in some areas.
Reception centres are open at Persalvic School Complex in Victoria and the C.B.S. Arena for those displaced. Officials encourage residents to follow local updates and respect fire restrictions.
