As wildfires rage across the province and fire hazards remain extremely high, Newfoundland and Labrador has dramatically increased penalties for violating fire bans, just in time for the 2025 forest fire season, which runs from April 24 to September 30 in Newfoundland and May 15 to September in Labrador.

How Big Are the Penalties?

  • First offence: Minimum fine of $50,000 (up from just $75), and possible six months in jail if unpaid.
  • Second offence: Minimum $75,000 fine, or up to one year in jail if not paid.
  • Third offence$150,000 fine, and potential one-year imprisonment for non-payment.

The severity of these penalties underscores the province’s intent to take fire safety and prevention very seriously.

Why the Escalation?

Premier John Hogan emphasized the urgency of the situation during a press briefing, stating that the drastic increase in fines and inclusion of jail time signals that the province demands compliance and expects residents to do the same.

Legal Basis

These changes are grounded in the Forest Fire Offence and Penalty Regulations, which now clearly outline escalating financial and legal consequences for repeat offenders.

Why Such Harsh Penalties?

With several large wildfires stretching across thousands of hectares, forcing evacuations and straining firefighting efforts, Newfoundland is using the weight of the law to protect communities and ecosystems.
