Newfoundland and Labrador is packed with incredible locally owned businesses, and this September, we asked locals to tell us about some of their favourites.
Good Day Newfoundland followers nominated businesses from across the province, with everything from locally made food and coffee to accommodations, wellness businesses, bakeries and makers appearing in the comments.
And the community definitely showed up.
Dozens of local businesses were recommended, giving us plenty of Newfoundland hidden gems to add to our bucket lists.
Based on the September nominations, here are 10 of the most recommended local businesses from our community.
1. Ace Sea Salt
Ace Sea Salt was the clear standout in this month’s nominations, receiving more recommendations than any other business.
Based in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ace Sea Salt creates locally made sea salt using water from the North Atlantic Ocean.
The small business has turned something Newfoundland has an abundance of, cold, salty Atlantic water, into a distinctly local product that celebrates the province and its connection to the sea.
Their sea salts make a particularly fun Newfoundland gift or addition to the kitchen for anyone who loves discovering locally made products.
2. Straight Shore Suites
For anyone planning a Newfoundland getaway, Straight Shore Suites was another favourite among our community.
Located along Newfoundland’s coast, the accommodations give visitors a place to settle in while exploring the surrounding communities and scenery.
It’s exactly the kind of locally owned stay we love discovering, especially for travellers looking beyond traditional hotels and searching for somewhere with a little more local character.
Definitely one to save for a future Newfoundland road trip.
3. Come From Away Cravings
Come From Away Cravings brings a taste of Newfoundland to the list.
The locally owned business specializes in Newfoundland-inspired treats and products, making it a fun stop for anyone who loves discovering local flavours.
It’s also the kind of business that makes shopping local especially fun, whether you’re picking something up for yourself or searching for a Newfoundland-inspired gift.
With several community members recommending it in September, it clearly has some local fans.
4. The Post Taphouse
If your Newfoundland bucket list revolves around good food and local places to eat, The Post Taphouse is one to put on your radar.
The locally owned spot offers a casual place to grab food and drinks, making it a great option for meeting up with friends or adding a new restaurant to your Newfoundland food list.
Independent restaurants and gathering places received plenty of love throughout our nominations, and The Post Taphouse was one of the names that came up repeatedly.
5. Gingerly Bakery
There’s nothing quite like discovering a great local bakery, and Gingerly Bakery earned plenty of love from our community.
The Newfoundland bakery creates sweet treats and baked goods that look almost too good to eat.
From beautifully made desserts to treats for special occasions, it’s the kind of small business that can quickly become a local favourite.
If exploring independent bakeries is an essential part of your travels around Newfoundland, add this one to your list.
6. Rolling Roast Coffee
Coffee lovers also made their voices heard during our September nominations.
Rolling Roast Coffee is a Newfoundland coffee business bringing locally roasted coffee to caffeine lovers across the province.
It’s a great example of the small businesses making Newfoundland’s food and drink scene more interesting, especially for anyone who would choose a local roast over a big coffee chain any day.
Consider this your sign to add another Newfoundland coffee business to your list.
7. Little Cup of Sea
Even the name Little Cup of Sea feels perfectly Newfoundland.
The local business was another community recommendation that stood out during September, offering an adorable beach hut rental inspired by Newfoundland and its connection to the ocean.
8. Newfound Wellness
Local wellness businesses got some love from the community too.
Newfound Wellness is a Newfoundland business focused on wellness and helping people make a little more room for self-care.
Its appearance among the community recommendations shows just how varied Newfoundland’s small business scene really is.
Food and shops may get plenty of attention, but locally owned wellness businesses are another category worth exploring and supporting.
9. Folk & Flora
Folk & Flora was another Newfoundland maker that caught the attention of locals.
The small business brings together creativity and nature-inspired products, making it a great one to discover if you love finding unique items from independent makers.
Businesses like this are part of what makes shopping local so much fun. Instead of finding the same products available everywhere, you can discover something created much closer to home.
10. Purple Butterfly Paper
Rounding out our September picks is Purple Butterfly Paper.
The Newfoundland small business specializes in creative paper goods and products, adding another local maker to this month’s incredibly varied list.
It’s a great business to keep in mind if you love stationery, paper goods, gifts or simply discovering creative entrepreneurs from around the province.
And with locals recommending it themselves, it earned a spot among our September community picks.
Newfoundland Has So Many Local Businesses Worth Discovering
These 10 businesses represent only a small portion of the local businesses nominated by the Good Day Newfoundland community.
From food and coffee to makers, accommodations, wellness businesses and locally created products, the nominations showed just how diverse Newfoundland and Labrador’s small business community is.
The September Community Picks aren’t intended to be a scientific survey or definitive ranking of every business in the province. They come directly from followers who wanted to show some love to businesses they enjoy and help other people discover them.
And judging by the number of different businesses that appeared in the comments, there are still plenty more Newfoundland hidden gems left to discover.
