One of the biggest reality TV franchises is heading to Atlantic Canada, and this time, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia fishing crews are taking centre stage.
Deadliest Catch: Northern Edge is a brand-new Canadian series inspired by Discovery’s long-running Deadliest Catch, and production has been taking place in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and the North Atlantic.
The eight-episode series will follow a new fleet of captains as they head into the North Atlantic in search of snow crab, bringing the realities of Atlantic Canada’s fishing industry to television screens across the country.
And this isn’t just another season of the original show.
Northern Edge marks the first international adaptation of the Deadliest Catch franchise, which has been documenting commercial fishing for more than two decades.
Deadliest Catch Is Heading To Atlantic Canada
The original Deadliest Catch has traditionally followed fishing crews working in the Bering Sea off Alaska.
Deadliest Catch: Northern Edge is moving the action thousands of kilometres east to the waters off Atlantic Canada.
According to Rogers Sports & Media, production has been underway in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and the North Atlantic.
The series will introduce viewers to a completely new fleet of captains and fishing communities while following crews working in one of the world’s most challenging marine environments.
For generations, fishing has played a major role in communities across Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, and the new series is expected to put those communities and their stories in the spotlight.
The Series Will Follow Atlantic Canada’s Crab Fishery
At the centre of Northern Edge is Atlantic Canada’s massive snow crab fishery.
The waters of the North Atlantic are home to what Warner Bros. Discovery describes as the largest snow crab biomass on Earth, creating a valuable fishery for the crews working off Canada’s East Coast.
But catching it is far from easy.
The new series will document captains navigating the North Atlantic aboard comparatively small fishing vessels while dealing with towering waves, powerful storms, ice and other challenges that come with fishing these waters.
Warner Bros. Discovery says crews will even venture toward a roughly 100-mile ice pack while navigating nor’easters and icebergs in search of crab.
It should make the Canadian version look noticeably different from the familiar Alaskan setting of the original series.
Newfoundland & Nova Scotia Fishers Will Be Front And Centre
While the scenery will undoubtedly be a major part of the show, Northern Edge is ultimately focused on the people who make their living on the water.
The series will introduce a new cast of captains and explore the experiences of fishing communities in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.
Rogers says the series will highlight the resilience, heritage and challenges surrounding Canada’s East Coast fishing industry.
It’s also a pretty massive platform for Atlantic Canada.
The original Deadliest Catch has been on television for more than 20 years, and Rogers says it was Discovery’s number-one series in Canada in 2025, reaching more than 1.6 million Canadians that year.
Now, viewers will get to see that familiar format applied to a fishery much closer to home.
It’s The First International Deadliest Catch Series
Perhaps the most significant part of the announcement is that Northern Edge represents a first for the franchise.
Despite the success of Deadliest Catch around the world, this is its first international adaptation.
The Canadian series is being produced by Attraction and Fremantle’s Original Productions in association with Discovery US.
Original Productions is also the company behind the original Deadliest Catch, bringing more than two decades of experience filming commercial fishing at sea to the new Atlantic Canadian production.
The first season will consist of eight hour-long episodes.
When Does Deadliest Catch: Northern Edge Premiere?
Atlantic Canadians won’t have to wait too much longer to see the finished series.
Deadliest Catch: Northern Edge is scheduled to premiere in January 2027 on Discovery in Canada.
Rogers has also promoted the series as being available to stream through Citytv+.
An exact premiere date has not yet been announced.
For fans of the original show, the new series will offer a completely different look at commercial fishing, swapping Alaska’s Bering Sea for the icy waters, fishing communities and crews of Atlantic Canada.
And for Newfoundlanders and Nova Scotians, it means one of television’s most recognizable fishing franchises is about to showcase a way of life that has shaped East Coast communities for generations.
