You Can Get Coffee & Fresh Baking Inside An 1830s Stone Manor In New Brunswick

If sipping hot apple cider and eating a freshly baked pastry inside a nearly 200-year-old stone manor sounds like your perfect fall afternoon, there’s a café in New Brunswick to add to your bucket list.

Cranewood Bakery in Sackville is tucked inside a beautiful Georgian stone manor built around 1836.

Today, the historic home has been transformed into a cozy bakery and café where visitors can grab locally roasted coffee, artisan bread, pastries and lunch while sitting inside rooms that have been part of Sackville for generations.

And during fall, the historic setting might be even more charming.

The Café Is Inside An 1830s Stone Manor

Cranewood isn’t a modern café designed to look old.

The building really dates back to around 1836.

Known as Cranewood, the Georgian-style stone house was originally built for prominent merchant and politician William Crane using local stone. It later became associated with politician and Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick Josiah Wood. (Tantramar Heritage Trust)

For decades, the property also served as the official residence of the president of Mount Allison University.

In 2013, the historic building began its next chapter as the bakery, café and gathering space visitors know today. (Cranewood on Main)

You Can Have Coffee In The Historic Dining Rooms

Part of what makes Cranewood so unique is that you aren’t just looking at the historic building from outside.

You can actually head inside and have your coffee or lunch in one of its historic dining rooms.

The café has preserved the feeling of an old home while turning the space into somewhere people can meet for coffee, freshly baked treats and meals. There’s also outdoor seating for warmer fall days. (Cranewood on Main)

It feels like the kind of place made for a chilly October afternoon.

Everything From Croissants To Sticky Buns Is Made In House

Then there’s the bakery.

Cranewood makes its baked goods fresh in house, with the selection changing throughout the week.

The current menu includes treats like croissants, pain au chocolat, cinnamon rolls, sticky buns, doughnuts, éclairs, Danish pastries, scones, muffins, pecan tarts and lemon tarts.

There are also artisan breads baked throughout the week.

And one of the most fitting options for fall is a squash and pumpkin seed bread, made with roasted squash and toasted pumpkin seeds. (Cranewood on Main)

You Can Get Hot Local Apple Cider

Coffee isn’t the only cozy drink on the menu.

Cranewood currently serves hot apple cider made with local cider from Belliveau Orchard.

You can also grab lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, chai lattes, London Fogs and coffee made with Cranewood’s custom blend from Maritime roaster Down East Coffee. (Cranewood on Main)

A hot cider, fresh pastry and an 1830s stone manor sounds like a pretty solid fall combination.

Add This Historic New Brunswick Café To Your Fall Road Trip

Cranewood is located right on Main Street in Sackville, making it an easy stop during a fall road trip through southeastern New Brunswick.

You could spend the morning exploring Sackville, grab coffee and fresh baking inside the historic manor and then head out to see the surrounding Tantramar region in its fall colours.

And considering the building will be approaching its 200th birthday in another decade, you’re getting a little New Brunswick history with your coffee too.
