This Movie Set In A Tiny Cape Breton Community Is Now Streaming On Crave

A movie filmed in Cape Breton and inspired by a true Nova Scotia story is getting attention across Canada!

Little Lorraine, a crime thriller set in a tiny Cape Breton fishing community, features a star-studded cast, beautiful coastal scenery and a story inspired by real events.

The film stars Stephen Amell, Sean Astin, Stephen McHattie and international music star J Balvin.

And after selling out screenings in Cape Breton earlier this year, the movie is now listed as available to stream through Crave.

Little Lorraine Is Inspired By A True Cape Breton Story

Set in the 1980s, Little Lorraine follows a group of Cape Breton coal miners who turn to lobster fishing after losing their jobs.

But what initially seems like an opportunity to support their families takes an unexpected turn when they become involved in an international smuggling operation.

The movie is inspired by real events connected to Nova Scotia’s coastline during the 1980s and 1990s.

It was also inspired by Nova Scotia musician Adam Baldwin’s song Lighthouse in Little Lorraine, which tells a story rooted in Cape Breton’s history.

Where Was Little Lorraine Filmed?

One of the most interesting things about the movie is that it was actually filmed in Cape Breton.

Production took place primarily around Sydney and Louisbourg, showcasing the island’s fishing communities, rugged coastline and small-town atmosphere.

Little Lorraine itself is a real community near Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island.

The film brings a piece of Nova Scotia’s history and culture to audiences across Canada.

The Movie Features Some Familiar Hollywood Stars

Despite its small-town setting, Little Lorraine features an impressive cast.

  • Stephen Amell, known for Arrow
  • Sean Astin, known for The Lord of the Rings and Stranger Things
  • Stephen McHattie, a well-known Canadian actor
  • Rhys Darby, known for Flight of the Conchords
  • Matt Walsh, known for Veep
  • J Balvin, the international music star

The film was directed by Nova Scotia-born filmmaker Andy Hines and marks his feature-length directorial debut.

Little Lorraine Was A Huge Hit In Cape Breton

When the film opened in Sydney in April 2026, the response from local audiences was incredible.

According to the Province of Nova Scotia, the movie sold more than 4,000 tickets in Cape Breton during its first week.

Nearly every screening during its opening weekend sold out, with additional showtimes added to meet demand.

The film also received recognition at the 2025 Atlantic International Film Festival, including awards for screenwriting and acting.

Where Can You Watch Little Lorraine?

Little Lorraine is listed as available through Crave in Canada, although viewers should confirm current availability through their subscription.

The movie is also available to rent or purchase through digital platforms, including Apple TV.

With its recognizable cast, dramatic storyline and strong Cape Breton connections, Little Lorraine is another example of Atlantic Canadian stories reaching audiences far beyond the region.
